How to Stay Out of Trouble with DOL

The Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) is a small federal agency within the U.S. Department of Labor. Its primary mission is to make sure labor unions comply with federal law. Whether it is over a challenged election or in connection with the OLMS Compliance Audit Program, it is very likely that an OLMS investigator will contact you at some point to determine if you are complying with the law.

  • Do you know what you can do to minimize your risk of coming under OLMS scrutiny?
  • Do you know what to expect if you are contacted by OLMS?
  • Do you know what resources are available to you?

Election Essentials

The requirements for conducting officer elections in compliance with the LMRDA are rigorous. They are far more rigorous than for other types of elections including public elections.

Every year hundreds of union elections are challenged.  Between 150 and 200 of those challenged elections end up being investigated by the OLMS.  Most are unions that have never before had an election problem or been the subject of an OLMS investigation.

BallotPoint’s workshop provides you with the practical information, tools, and resources needed to take the mystery out of the LMRDA and help you prepare to:

Properly plan and conduct an election and survive an OLMS investigation

Financial Recordkeeping and Reporting Essentials

Labor union financial matters are subject to a federal law, the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (LMRDA).

It is very likely that an OLMS investigator will, at some point, call on your local to determine if you are complying with various provisions of the LMRDA.  Wouldn’t you like to know what to expect when that happens?

At this workshop, we will take the mystery out of LMRDA financial reporting requirements and help you prepare for an OLMS compliance audit. Covered topics include:

  • Ten steps to your union’s financial health
  • Union recordkeeping requirements
  • Union reporting requirements
  • OLMS compliance audit program (CAP)
  • The OLMS website
